LAOAG CITY — Women entrepreneurship in Ilocos Norte continues to gain ground as more and more women here avail of a soft loan livelihood assistance program courtesy of the Gender and Development Office (GAD) and Provincial Social Welfare Office of the provincial government.
Over the past three years, the Lacasa loan program has assisted hundreds of women entrepreneurs here who are in need of capital to start or sustain a small business .
They are the primary target of this government-initiated program to further promote gender equality and empower women in development.
Record shows women in general are known to be intuitive and smart in managing a business because they are good at budgeting. In a typical family household for example, mothers are trained how to budget the household food needs and allocating funds for children’s school supplies and daily allowance.
In recognition of the vital role of women and the economy, Janet London, officer-in-charge of GAD said almost half million is ready to be released to benefit at least 32 women who applied for the Lacasa loan program during the last quarter of 2015.
London said the beneficiaries will be given Php 10,000 each and agreed to return the whole amount after a period of six months or less with a minimal interest payment.
Most of the women beneficiaries are engaged in hog-breeding and meat-processing, retail and direct selling, rice and vegetable trading and production of off-season fruits and vegetables. PNA / northboundasia.com
