MANILA, Philippines — United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) standard bearer Vice President Jejomar C. Binay on Monday pledged to respect life and support a clean and honest election.
Binay signed the Catholic Church’s T.R.U.T.H (Truthful, Responsible, Upright, Transparent and Honest) Covenant together with other candidates after a mass celebrated by Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle at the Manila Cathedral.
Binay also vowed to promote at all times “an unequivocal respect and reverence for life.”
The Vice President previously said that he would be committed to uplifting the lives of every Filipino and respecting the value of life.
“I have dedicated my life to fighting for the poor: as a human rights lawyer during martial law, as mayor of Makati and as your Vice President. My presidency will be one that respects and upholds the dignity of women, children and the marginalized. My presidency will promote respect for human rights and the value of life,” Binay said.
He added that there is a need for compassion and genuine dedication to end poverty by giving the poor the basic necessities to live and not killing them.
“That is why I stand firm in my belief that violence as a platform of governance oppresses the poor, the dispossessed, and the powerless,” Binay said.
The covenant also bound candidates to exhaust all means to encourage every Filipino to responsibly exercise their right to vote as well as uphold the credibility and the integrity of the election process and the dignity of the Filipino people.
Bets were told to promote a clean and honest election and to “desist from using violence, deceit, fraud, and other unfair and dishonest practices.”
Candidates should “avoid resorting to the politics of personalities and patronage” as well as refrain from using “guns, goons and gold” in the elections, the covenant added.
Earlier, pro-life groups under the Buhay Partylist and the Ang Pro-Life Partylist such as the Servants Community, Courage Philippines, Pro-Life Philippines Foundation, and other pro-life and Christian Catholic organizations announced that they were backing Binay’s presidential bid.
