SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – Vice- President Jejomar Binay will not be part of President Aquino’s party in welcoming the heads of states and delegates to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in Manila next week.
“The protocol is that the Vice- President is part of the welcoming party for heads of states on a ‘state visit’ but not on their attendance in the APEC meeting. But I will be attending the reception for our foreign guests,” Binay said when asked about his role in the event.
The Philippines will host the 23rd APEC Leaders’ Meeting on November 18 and 19.
All chief executives from the 21 member-economies, including US President Barack Obama, are expected to arrive in the country for the summit.
“In cases of activities like the APEC, there should be amendments in the law defining the job of the Vice- President. All what I am doing now is to look up above and wait for my role,” Binay said in jest.
Ambassador Marciano Paynor,Jr., chief of the organizing committee for the Asia-Pacific Economic Council, has been quoted as saying that President Aquino is on top of the situation as the country awaits the arrival of the Asia-Pacific leaders.
Reports say Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indonesian President Joko Widodo would not be attending the summit. JUN ELIAS/NorthboundPH
