COTABATO CITY – Police operatives in Colombio, Sultan Kudarat neutralized today a gunman who barged inside a public school in Colombio, Sultan Kudarat and shot a lady teacher.
Senior Inspector Bernard Francia, Colombio municipal police chief, said the suspect, identified through his residence certificate as Anwar Kamanso Ulangkaya, 25, appeared to be under the influence of illegal drugs when he barged inside the Colombio Elementary School at 9 a.m.
Francia said Ulangkaya, a resident of nearby Datu Paglas town in Maguindanao, entered the school grounds through the main gate and accosted by the school’s security guard.
But Ulangkaya opened fire on the security guard and missed as he fled toward the adjacent Colombio National High School in Barangay Poblacion, about 45 kilometers south of here.
Once inside the high school grounds, he fired his cal. 45 pistol toward Emma Jane Fernandez, a teacher, sending the students and teachers scampering for safety. Luckily the teacher was unhurt.
Francia said responding police officers negotiated for Ulangkaya’s peaceful surrender. Instead, he traded shots with the police who fired back, killing him.
PO1 Nor Anas was slightly injured during the shootout. Police recovered the victim’s cal. 45 pistol and several spent shells at the crime scene.
Francia said it was fortunate no student or teacher was hurt in the shootout but some were traumatized by the incident.
Police and local social welfare workers have conducted psychosocial intervention on the teachers and students.
Francia said steps have been taken to prevent similar incident in the future. PNA
