ROME — A day of mourning was observed in Italy on Saturday, as the Italian government held a state funeral for scores of people killed in a magnitude 6.2 earthquake that rocked the central part of the European country earlier in the week.
Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Matteo Renzi attended the ceremony at a church in Ascoli Piceno in the Marche region, where about 50 people died.
The quake that struck the country at 3:36 a.m. Wednesday killed 290 people as of Saturday. The government authorities also estimated that more than 2,100 people were displaced mainly because their homes collapsed. PNA/Kyodo/northboundasia.com
