Santiago City under state of calamity due to massive agri damage

SANTIAGO CITY, Isabela — This city was placed under the state of calamity due to the cumulative damages brought by the recent El Nino phenomenon and strong typhoons Karen and Lawin in the agricultural sector here.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) passed Tuesday the resolution placing the city under state of calamity after receiving report from the City Agriculture Office of cumulative agricultural damages of more than PHP100 million.

SP member Arlene Alvarez – Reyes, Committee Chairman on Agriculture, said the declaration of the state of calamity is imperative so that the city government can utilize the calamity fund to assist the affected Santiagueno farmers.

Reyes said that although there are assistance from the Department of Agriculture, the city government needs to augment the support that are being provided to the affected farmers.
