CAMP GEN. SIMEON A. OLA, Legazpi City — Robbers barged into the house of a village councilor and took away about Php4 million in cash from representatives of the Land Bank of the Philippines and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) at about 4 a.m. Wednesday in Barangay Villahermosa in the island-municipality of Rapu- Rapu, Albay.
An initial report of Sr. Supt. Celso Arcueno, Albay provincial police director, said the Land Bank and DSWD representatives were temporarily resting at the residence of Barangay kagawad Ted Vibat when the suspects, armed with knives barged in, poked the bladed weapons on them, tied them and carried away with the cash intended for the 4Ps in the area.
There are about 4,000 families who enjoy the 4Ps program of the government of the area on the initiative of Albay Gov. Joey Sarte Salceda as part of his service to the island-town.
One can reach the municipality through sea travel characterized by rough water, big waves and strong easterly winds as the place faces the Pacific Ocean.
There is no bank in the area so that the Land Bank and DSWD officials go there by water travel whenever it is time for the distribution of cash assistance to the beneficiaries.
DSWD Regional Director Arnel B. Garcia said it would take time to distribute the cash benefits to the recipients since although the amount is ensured, it would take time to process the documents.
Salceda, who was in Metro Manila, immediately ordered a manhunt operation against the culprits and a thorough investigation of the incident. PNA/northboundasia.com
