LINGAYEN – Agriculture in the Ilocos Region remains stable during the past few years, a Department of Agriculture (DA) official said.
DA Regional Field Office 1 Technical Director Eduardo Gonzales said because of its rich soil that can be planted to all crops, the region maintains a self sufficiency level in rice at 180 percent.
Ilocos Region comprises the province of Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte.
Region 1 ranked fourth among the regions contributing to the food needs of the country with Pangasinan fifth among all provinces contributing to the food of the nation, he said.
In rice, Pangasinan ranked fourth in the whole nation after Nueva Ecija and Isabela in that order.
Gonzales also said that the region has reached a self-sufficiency level in corn.
“Last year, we were one of the awardees of the quality corn achievers’ award, meaning the best quality corn in the entire country belongs to region one,” he said. PNA/ northboundasia.com
