Provincial Business Enterprises Recognized As Economic Change Agents

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union –Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the provinces were recognized as agents of economic growth during the opening of MSMED Week celebration at the La Union Agri-Tourism Center here recently.

With the theme, “7Ms Towards a Shared Prosperity for ASEAN MSMEs, ” the celebration was led by Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – La Union in partnership with La Union MSMED Council.

Daria Mingaracal, provincial director of DTI-La Union, underscored the role of MSMEs as important agents in economic development, especially with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) economic integration in 2015 aimed at better job opportunities and shared prosperity among members.

“It is proper to recognize the SMEs contribution in terms of economic enterprise activities that provide employment and investment through this celebration,” Mingaracal said.

She also disclosed that the DTI, as the lead agency in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) pillar, organized the ASEAN 2017 MSME Development Summit on July 14 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Manila which aimed to present to local entrepreneurs wider opportunities in the AEC and to inform them on government initiatives in support of MSME development.

“As part of ASEAN, we have to be dynamic, not only the SMEs but also the service providers. That is why this MSMED Week celebration is important, so we can recognize and understand our role and our contributions,” she added.

John Y. Chan, chair of the La Union MSMED Council, expressed his gratitude to the support of DTI and the active participation of all the members of the council for their efforts in organizing the event this year.

“Celebrations every year have been a good avenue for partnerships between the concerned government agencies and entrepreneurs in the province,” Chan said.

Meanwhile, the provincial government again extended its support to local businesses in the province by leasing space at the Agri-Tourism Center for interested entrepreneurs.

Aside from exhibiting local products during the program, the DTI and the Department of Science and Technology conducted information drive while the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas dealt on coin exchange. Miriam P. Aquino/PIA1-La Union
