MANILA – The camp of Senator Grace Poe expressed confidence on Tuesday that the Supreme Court (SC) will uphold the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET) decision junking a disqualification case against the lady senator.

“Clearly, on two occasions the members studied the merits of the position of Senator Poe and deemed that she is a natural born Filipino. They saw wisdom in the legal arguments raised by her,” Poe’s spokesman Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian said in a text message to the media.

Gatchalian made this reaction after 2013 losing senatorial candidate Rizalito David appealed before the SC the SET ruling, saying it is the prerogative of David to elevate his complaint to the SC.

Gatchalian maintained that the decision of SET cannot be considered political in nature since those who sided with Poe come from different political parties.

The SET voted 5-4 to junk David’s petition with Senators Cynthia Villar (Nacionalista Party), Pia Cayetano (NP), Paolo Benigno ‘Bam’ Aquino (Liberal Party), Vicente Sotto III (Nationalist People’s Coalition) and Loren Legarda (NPC) voting in favor of Poe.

Those who voted to disqualify Poe were SET chairperson Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, Justices Teresita Leonardo-de Castro and Arturo Brion, and Senator Nancy Binay. PNA
