MANILA — Sen. Grace Poe on Monday said she plans to look into government expenses on foreign trips amid reports that some Cabinet members were travelling with their family members.
“I haven’t seen their expense reports perhaps when we have our budget hearing, I can look into that, we will look into that,” Poe said in a TV interview on Monday.
“Gusto nating malaman, dapat hiwalay ang bayad ng mga kasama nila. Naintindihan ko, they want to spend some quality time with their family, even on an official trip. But who paid for them? (We just want to find out, that the expenses for their companions were separate. I understand that they want to spend some quality time with their family, even on an official trip. But who paid for them?),” she added.
Poe said she was aware that officials could easily say that they paid for themselves but reminded the government that it has to send out the message to public that they are “prudent’ enough when it came to expenses.
“Now, they can always say that ‘we paid for it ourselves,’ that’s fine. But I think that also the message that comes out, that government has to be very conservative when it comes to expenses,” Poe said.
She further said that the government should be able to correct this image especially because citizens are “very conscious” on the lifestyle of the chief executive.
“…In social media, I think that government officials should be a little bit careful,” she added.
Malacanang earlier dismissed critics saying that recent foreign trips of Pres. Duterte became a junket for government officials.
Pres. Rodrigo Duterte himself has encouraged his Cabinet members to take economy class and stay in inexpensive hotels when traveling. ANP/PNA-northboundasia.com
