PNP, Sea Patrol in 2 Quezon towns nab 7 illegal fishers

LUCENA CITY — Joint teams of the Philippine National Police (PNP) of the town of Plaridel in this province and Sea Patrol (Bantay Dagat) under the Bureau of Fisheries of the Department of Agriculture (DA) nabbed four suspected illegal fishers within the protected 15 kilometers off the shore of this town.

In a report received today, the joint teams of Plaridel PNP and Sea Patrol (Bantay Dagat) while on seaborne patrol on Wednesday (Nov. 4) spotted the motorized fishing vessel Alma Fe which was later identified as owned by Ariel Garredo and manned by Joselito Bebanco, 50, boat captain, a resident of the nearby town of Atimonan.

Arrested suspects included Bernard Linao Cañete, 55, single, master fisherman; Jomar Bibon Betito, 30, married, fishing boat crew and Mike Garcia Aresba, 18, crew, all residents of Angeles Village in the town of Atimonan.

Fifty kilograms of fish were confiscated and were later distributed to indigent families in the town while the suspects were released after paying the corresponding fines with official receipt for violating the Municipal Ordinance against Illegal Fishing in Protected Areas.

Meanwhile, on the same day, three persons were arrested in the town of Buenavista for trawl fishing at Cawa Village by joint elements of Buenavista police and the Fishery Enforcement Team (FLET) of the town.

Authorities identified the suspects as Raymond Mogronaba Alfiler, 28, boat captain together with Ruben Redoma Maaño, Jr., single and Domingo Reyes Villanueva, 32, all residents of Cabong Village of same town.

Confiscated by the authorities included a motorized boat colored green and white with magnum cooler engine colored rusty black and fishing equipment.

The suspects were detained at Buenavista Municipal Police Station custodial facility while a criminal case in violation of Sec. 28 of Municipal Ordinance Number 02-006 of Municipal Fisheries Code of Buenavista was prepared for filing in the court. PNA
