CALAMBA CITY, Laguna — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, Director General Ronald Dela Rosa on Monday likened Dr. Jose Rizal’s heroism to the mandate and courage of the PNP and the Armed forces of the Philippines (AFP) who are now battling terrorists in Mindanao.
Speaking at the 156 birth anniversary celebration of the Calamba-born national hero at the National Shrine here, Dela Rosa said Rizal displayed great love of country, strong conviction and untiring campaign for the unity of the Filipino people against foreign oppressors.
To date, Dela Rosa said members of the PNP and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), like Rizal in his time, continue to risk their lives to protect the community and the Filipino people.
”We continue to mourn for the soldiers and policemen who lost their lives to save Marawi City from the hands of the terrorists and even pray for those who continue to fight and save lives across the nation,” reflected Dela Rosa.
He also acknowledged community workers, village officials, traffic aides and street sweepers, who in their own little way, continue to work usually under the heat of the sun to help build our nation.
He also cited the sacrifices of teachers who mold the youth to become good citizens; farmers and fisher folks who make sure that there are enough food on the table.
”All of them are living heroes and we salute them today,” Dela Rosa said, emphasizing and acknowledging that heroes are not only those who risked their lives but also those who continue to help in nation building.
Dela Rosa vowed that the PNP will continue to adhere to the ideals and the heroism of Rizal.
”For the PNP, this day is an opportunity to reaffirm and strengthen our commitment for peace and freedom that Dr. Jose Rizal fought for,” Dela Rosa said.
He also vowed to continue the relentless campaign against illegal drugs, crimes and corruption and all forms of lawlessness in our midst.
Admitting that he may not be the intelligent type like Rizal, but they share the same passion and devotion — the love of country and commitment to offer their lives to defend the Republic.
”We want a nation that is free from drugs, corruption and other forms of lawlessness. This is our way of keeping our eyes of the heroism of Dr. Jose Rizal and our other heroes,” he said. Zen Trinidad/PNA-northboundasia.com
