MANILA  — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded 11 volcanic earthquakes around Mt. Kanlaon, an active volcano in Negros island, and remains under Alert level 1.

In its advisory, Phivolcs said its seismic monitoring network recorded 11 volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours.

It added that moderate emission of dirty white steam and ash plumes that rose up to 150 meters high above the summit crater before drifting to the southwest was observed in the morning.

Alert level 1 status currently prevails over Kanlaon,  which means that it is at an abnormal condition and period of unrest. <P>The local government units and the public are reminded that entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited due to the further possibilities of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

Civil aviation authorities must also advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as airborne ash from a sudden eruption can be hazardous to aircraft. PNA
