PH netter Eala wins Japan tournament

MANILA — Top seed Alexandra Eala outclassed Japanese Ai Maruyama, 6-0, 6-1, to win the girls singles title in the Sutama International Junior Championship held recently at the Club Verde clay court in Yamanashi, Japan.

Eala defeated Hong Kong’s Kei Yau Cheung, 6-1, 6-2, in the second round; Japanese Yuma Komatsu, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinal; fourth seed Japanese Yukina Kubo in the semifinal.

Meanwhile, Eala is scheduled to leave for France next week to join the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Under-14 touring team to Young Stars Tournaments, a program sponsored by the Grand Slam Development Fund.

She was invited by the ITF and the Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) to participate in a training camp and a series of European tournaments sponsored by the Grand Slam Development Fund.

Aside from France, she will also visit the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Czech Republic.

Eala is a member of the team that played in the World Juniors Tennis Championships Asia-Oceania Final Qualifying in Bangkok, Thailand last March. Her teammates are Ma. Carmencita Carlos and Amanda Gabrielle Zoleta.

Each year, talented players from developing tennis countries are chosen to join ITF touring teams to play in higher-level competitions outside of their regions. The teams are supervised by an experienced ITF coach.

The players are selected based on their performance in international tournaments.

The ITF organizes international teams and regional teams from Africa, Asia, Caribbean/Central America, Pacific Oceania, Eastern Europe and South America. Jean Malanum/
