Number of injured in La Union explosion rises to four

AGOO, La Union — The number of people injured as a result of a bomb explosion a that hit the back-up vehicle of La Union’s 2nd District Representative Eufranio Eriguel at around 9:30 a.m. in Barangay Sta. Barbara here Saturday now rose to four.

Supt. Artemio Infante, La Union police’s information officer, identified the victims as SPO2 Jack Baguan, Eriguel’s police escort; and Eriquel’s supporters Samuel Ofiaza, Anthony Casem, and Jovanne Cacayuran.

Infante said the incident occurred at Verceles Street, barely 50 meters away from the residence of Eriguel, where a parked blue motorcycle allegedly mounted with an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded and hit the back-up van while the convoy of the lawmaker was passing on their way to a campaign sortie.

Police said that the bomb was placed inside the utility box of the motorcycle. They have yet to determine the motive of the incident.

Infante said that two of the four injured victims were in critical condition when rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The ill-fated Toyota Grandia van had eight passengers. Eriguel, who was aboard his Toyota Land Cruiser, survived the incident.

Eriguel, who is supporting the presidential bid of Vice President Jejomar Binay, did not seek his third and final term as representative and instead his wife, outgoing Agoo Mayor Sandra Eriguel is running for the congressional race in the 2nd District.
