Number of drug-free barangays in Dagupan rises to 12

DAGUPAN CITY — Two more barangays (villages) of Dagupan were declared today (Monday) as drug-free, raising the number of drug-cleared barangays in the city to 12 so far.

Supt. Neil Miro, police chief of Dagupan, identified the two newly declared drug-free barangays as Lasip Grande and Carael.

Mayor Belen Fernandez signed the certifications declaring Barangays Lasip Grande and Carael as drug-free.

The certifications were also signed by Barangay Chairman Rodolfo Siapno of Lasip Grande and Barangay Chairwoman Luzviminda Velasquez of Carael.

The signing was witnessed by Supt. Neil Miro, chief of police of Dagupan City.

Miro said these brought to 12 the number of drug-free barangays in Dagupan since the war on drugs began in July this year.

Three more are expected to be declared drug-free in the next few days.

The 10 other drug-free barangays in Dagupan are Mamalingling, Salisay, Tebeng, Pogo Grande, Mangin, Salapingao, Barangay IV, Bolosan, Lomboy and Poblacion Oeste.

There are 19 more barangays whose clearing operations are still ongoing.

Miro earlier vowed that 80 to 90 percent of the barangays in Dagupan will be declared drug-free before the year ends.

He said the barangay officials of Dagupan are extending their wholehearted cooperation to the police in these clearing operations.

Meanwhile, six of the surrendered drug users from different barangays and who belong to poor families, will undergo rehabilitation through the city’s Sagip User Rehabilitation Empowerment (SURE) program.

Under the program, all the six will undergo rehabilitation through the Region One Medical Center Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Center with the city government bankrolling the cost estimated at P10,000 per head per month.

After their rehabilitation, they will be trained to undertake different livelihood projects which they can use to earn a living.

Mayor Fernandez said nine more surrendered drug users are being processed for inclusion in the SURE program. Leonardo Micua/
