Nueva Vizcaya town, school grab disaster-ready awards

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya — The province’s Villaverde town and its Bintawan National High School(BNHS) have been chosen as one of the top three awardees of the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) 17th Gawad KALASAG for 2015.

Evaliza Agamata, provincial disaster risk reduction management officer, said Villaverde town got the award for best Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (MDRRMC) in the fourth to sixth class municipal category.

BNHS also got the second place under hall of fame awardee, while DQ Liwag National High School of Camarines Norte grabbed the best rescue unit of public schools in rural areas with Calbiga National High School in Samar as third.

The awards will be given on May 2 at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

Gawad KALASAG, or Kalamidad at Sakuna Labanan, Sariling Galing ang Kaligtasan, is the government’s recognition scheme to various stakeholders that design and implement Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) programs, projects and activities which aims to protect high-risk communities against hazards and empower them more in addressing vulnerabilities within their communities.

Other top awards given to Region 2 are: Best Provincial DRRMC to the province of Isabela.

The award for Government Emergency Response Management in urban areas goes to Rescue 922 of Cauayan City.

Edmund Jon Nipay of Jones, Isabela will also be awarded Heroic Act by the individual. PNA/northboundasia.com
