No VIP treatment for Sen. De Lima, says PNP

MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday assured that there is no VIP treatment for embattled Senator Leila de Lima who was arrested for drug trafficking charges.

No aircon. No shower. Only an electric fan, pail and bed can be found inside De Lima’s cell at the PNP Custodial Center in Camp Crame.

This was how PNP Headquarters Support Service director Chief Supt. Philip Philips described the quarters where the senator will be detained.

De Lima’s temporary detention in Camp Crame was in accordance with the commitment order issued by Muntinlupa City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 204 Judge Juanita Guerrero on Friday morning after the senator was presented to the court and her arrest warrant returned.

The PNP Custodial Center is also where Senators Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada and Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr. are being held.

However, De Lima will not get an opportunity to talk with the two former senators as male and female inmates are housed separately in the facility.

Philips noted that De Lima is the facility’s 26th resident and the sole female prisoner.

He also gave assurances that De Lima’s immediate family and lawyers will have access to the senator at any time, on any day of the week.

Philips said that while De Lima’s cell may be considered as “spartan”, it is decent and safe.
