“No-Smoking” in La Union City cemeteries during “Undas”

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union — The three public cemeteries and memorial parks here will be strictly non-smoking zones during the All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day as the city’s Anti-Smoking Ordinance will be enforced during the period.

Dr. Eduardo Posadas, head of the City Health Office, said Friday they have coordinated with the city police office and concerned villages to ensure that the measure is properly implemented.

“ We will deploy enforcement teams and arrest all violators,” he said.

Around 40, 000 residents are expected to flock to the Lingsat Public Cemetery, the city’s biggest in Barangay Lingsat; and 10, 000 to 15,000 to the Kalye Patay to visit their departed loved ones.

Aside from the anti-smoking ordinance, Posadas said they will not allow individuals to bring alcoholic drinks, karaoke machines and related equipment, gambling paraphernalia and deadly weapons inside the cemeteries.

But he said they would be more strict in the implementation of the ordinance which prohibits smoking in public places and carries a penalty of a fine of P1,000 up to P3,000.

Violators who will not be able to pay the fine will be detained at the nearest city police station for a certain period of time. VA/Northbound Philippines News
