CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY –- More groups joined the rally as protesters entered a second day seeking an impartial adjudication on the case of discharged City Mayor Oscar Moreno here.
Moreno has filed a petition for a permanent writ of preliminary injunction (WPI) as the 60-day Temporary Restraining Order that the Court of Appeals has granted last November 13, 2015 would expire on January 13, 2016.
Residents of Cagayan De Oro joined by the local political opposition protested Moreno’s WPI and urged the court to dismiss the petition.
A group of the urban poor and the indigenous people (IP) also joined the rally in front of the CA here Friday, some bearing placards demanding Moreno to step down.
The local police command has dispatched a civil disturbance unit Friday to maintain a peaceful rally and secure the CA at the Julio Pacana Street here.
A police officer said that the rally-protesters led by local government officials have been peaceful. “We are ready to dispense once the crowd becomes unruly,” the police said.
The Ombudsman has dismissed Moreno and the City Treasurer for grave misconduct for reducing a PHP 2.9 million tax due the city government without an authority from the City Council.
Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales approved the dismissal of Moreno from service and perpetual disqualification from public service on August 2015, but the dismissal order was served on November 12, 2015.
Moreno also faces several other graft cases that include two plunder cases with the Ombudsman. PNA / northboundasia.com
