Miss Universe organizing committee approves plan for Baguio City to host candidates

BAGUIO CITY –This city will be one of the country’s venues for the Miss Universe pre-pageant activities in January next year.

Baguio Country Club (BCC) Costumer Service head Andrew Pinero on Wednesday said members of the Miss Universe organizing team were flown in to Baguio City for an “ocular inspection.”

Pinero, a member of the coordinating team for the Hotel and Restaurants Association of Baguio (HRAB) said the members, after being given a simple tour of the facilities and briefed about the security plans, approved the proposal to make Baguio City as one of several destinations of the Miss Universe pre-pageant activities.

He said 24 candidates and reigning Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach are expected to visit this city.

He added that during the visit, the candidates will be given a short city tour which will include The Mansion and the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).

On the day of the PMA visit, the candidates will be honored with a “silent drill” exhibition at the Borromeo Field.

To cap the day, the candidates and the reigning Miss Universe will be paraded on four Baguio Flower Festival themed floats along the stretch of South Drive from the Panagbenga Park at the Upper Session Road Rotunda to the Baguio Country Club.

The short parade will also feature winners of the Baguio Flower Festival street dancers and bands.

Pinero said public announcements will be made to invite BaguioCity residents and visitors to witness the short float parade with the reigning Miss Universe and the candidates.

In a press briefing Monday, City Mayor Mauricio Domogan said the city government coordinated with administrative officer of The Mansion to open the gates for the Miss Universe candidates.

Domogan said the LGU is requesting that The Mansion be opened to the public except for the “executive house,”the official residence of the Philippine President in Baguio City.

In the same briefing, Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) officer-in-charge (OIC) director, Police Senior Supt. Ramil Saculles bared security plans during the visit of the Miss Universe candidates.

Saculles said the BCPO team will secure venues outside the BCC and will coordinate with BCC security personnel inside the prestigious club.

The visit is expected to give the candidates a glimpse of highland culture and historical sites as well as the warm hospitality of the people of Baguio City.

The Miss Universe candidates will be flown in and out of the city via the Loakan airport. Jojo Lamaria/PNA-northboundasia.com
