DAGUPAN CITY — There is enough supply of bangus (milkfish) in Dagupan during the Holy Week when Catholics will shun at eating meat in observance of their religious beliefs and instead eat fish and vegetables in their meals.
This was bared by City Agriculturist Emma Molina, noting that the price of milkfish today is PHP120 per kilo which is expected to go up during the Holy Week — now only few more days away.
Molina said milkfish raisers not only from Dagupan but also Western Pangasinan rejoice at the coming of every Holy Week because that is the time they can at least recoup their losses when the price of milkfish even goes up to PHP150 per kilo.
Up for sale at the Dagupan Fish Market during the Lenten season are a combination of milkfish raised in fish cages in Bolinao and Sual and those from the fishponds of Dagupan.
Molina said that many fish farmers deliberately delayed to harvest their stocks as they are anticipating big demands of milkfish during the Holy Week when Catholic devotees come to the city to buy fish after coming from the Manaoag Minor Basilica.
At the same time, Molina assured that there is also enough fish to be grilled when Dagupan will hold a Bangusan street party on April 30 as a penultimate activity of the 2016 Bangus Festival.
She said in that activity, some 25,000 pieces of milkfish will be needed, all of which will be supplied by fishpond owners of Dagupan. PNA/northboundasia.com
