Mayor orders temporary transfer of night market vendors affected by DPWH projects

BAGUIO CITY -– Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan directed concerned offices to prepare temporary relocation sites for the vendors of the popular “Baguio City Night Market.”

The night market vendors will be affected by the road projects of the Department of Public Works and Highways Cordillera Regional Office (DPWH-CAR) which commenced in March.

Iris Cabiles of the Baguio City Market Superintendent’s on Thursday said the DPWH started the road works along F.B. Harrison Road on April 14.

Harrison Road is a main thoroughfare occupied by the night market vendors from 9 p.m. to 12 m.n.

Cabiles said the areas being prepared are the Ganza public parking area and Perfecto Street.

Cabiles explained that not all will be transferred at the same time because the spaces are too small to accommodate more than 200 vendors.

The DPWH road projects will be implemented by sectors and vendors affected in the sector will be transferred to the temporary areas.

There are three sectors along Harrison Road and each sector will be completed in three to five days, Cabiles said.

The directive from Domogan, who chairs the Baguio City Market Authority (BCMA), emphasized that the vendors will be allowed to use the Ganza area and Perfecto Street as temporary areas of business and the vendors must strictly follow the same rules and regulations set by the city.

The DPWH-CAR is implementing Baguio City infrastructure projects which include PHP319 million for 39 roads and bridges, PHP200 million for four flood control drainage works and PHP142.5 million for local infrastructure projects.

There are 81 projects set for implementation within this year with 59 already awarded before the election ban took effect last March 25.

DPWH-CAR will implement eight more projects with a funding of PHP256.6 million to be completed within the year.

The remaining 14 projects is scheduled for implementation next year (2017).

These projects include the construction of rain water collection facilities for major roads in the city specifically along Kennon Road, Magsaysay Avenue, Quirino Highway (Baguio-Naguilian Road), Kayang Street, Abanao Street and Harrison Road. PNA/northboundasia.com
