BAUANG, La Union – A 16-year old boy from Buguias, Benguet province drowned last Sunday while swimming with other companions in the beach water of Barangay Taberna here.
Vicente Kulas and his friends were swimming in the area about 9:00 o’clock in the morning of the same day, but he was swept by undercurrents and his body was found several hours later, about 10 o’clock at night, in the adjacent shorelines of Barangay Pugo.
The companions of Kulas, identified as Junifer Alingbas and Jun Nisperos, circumstances unknown, are all residents of Baculungan Sur, a village of Buguias town, 83 kilometers away to the northeast from Baguio, the country’s summer capital.
Chief Inspector Silverio Ordinando Jr., La Union police information officer, said that Kulas and his group, riding on an unidentified private vehicle, arrived in the popular village and headed straight to the beach to swim.
It was not clear whether Kulas and his group arrived from Buguias, a town known for its centuries-old mummy Apo Anno, a folk hero who lived before the Spaniards came to the place.
Ordinando said that Kulas was found dead by a resident of the village of Pugo, while Alingbas and Nisperos were brought by rescuers to the Ilocos Training Regional Medical Center in nearby San Fernando City for treatment. Erwin Beleo/Northbound Philippines News
