Lightning strikes in Sarangani: 2 dead, 3 hurt

GENERAL SANTOS CITY — Two people were killed while three others injured after they were hit by a lightning that struck in an outskirt village in Malungon town in Sarangani Province on Monday afternoon.

Chief Insp. Ramon Gencianos, acting chief of the Malungon police station, said Tuesday, the victims were playing billiards at the height of the rains at sitio Lambugad, Barangay Tamban when they were hit by a lightning at around 1:30 p.m.

He identified the fatalities as Edgardo Kong, 40, and Ariel Diagan, 22, both residents of the area.

Three other local residents identified as Kinti Capital, Abnel Bansil and Renjun Pandamon sustained various injuries, he said.

The police official said the victims were directly struck by lightning as the area experienced thunderstorm Monday afternoon.

“They were playing at a billiards hall when lightning suddenly struck them,” Gencianos told reporters.

He said the five sustained injuries on different parts of their bodies and were brought to the Malungon Municipal Hospital by responding rescuers from the Malungon Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office.

But the official said two of the victims, Kong and Diagan, were declared dead upon arrival at the hospital due to severe injuries.

He said Capital and Pandamon are still confined at the municipal hospital while Bansil was discharged after undergoing treatment for minor injuries. PNA-northboundasia.com
