LAOAG CITY — The city government of Laoag, in coordination with the city police, gave free drug tests to identified drug personalities who had turned themselves in to authorities.
Local officials initiated the drug tests, set to be given thrice a year, to monitor former drug dependents and ensure that they are living a clean life.
“This is to ensure that the volunteers had undergone total reformation and stop the illegal activity upon surrendering to the police,” Laoag City Mayor Chevylle V. Farinas said Friday.
Farinas said her administration is firm in making Laoag City clean and drug-free in support of the national government’s effort to crack down on illegal drug users and syndicates.
To date, a total of 761 personalities have surrendered in this city. They have signed an affidavit, pledging not to get involved in the illegal activity again and promising to be proactive in preventing the proliferation of narcotics.
“This is to show that we are bent on really helping them change and of course, as protection to the people who provided employment to them upon our request,” said Farinas.
Meanwhile, in line with President Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-drug campaign, all City Hall employees have also been subjected to random drug tests.
Under the law, government employees who test positive for dangerous drugs will be subjected to disciplinary and administrative sanctions.PNA/northboundasia.com
