Laoag airport gear up aerodrome certification

LAOAG CITY — More international flights are expected to land passengers at the Laoag International Airport (LIA) as it gears up for aerodrome certification.

LIA manager Ronald Estabillo said they are now on the third stage of the accreditation process.

The International Civil Aviation Organization has a set of standards focusing on the safety of the airport and its passengers particularly on properly observing safety manuals, having well-trained personnel to respond in case of emergency and ensuring well-maintained buildings.

Barely a month since a team from the Aerodrome and Air Navigation Safety Oversight Office conducted inspection and audit plan at the airport, Estabillo said they have to complete the five stages to acquire full certification.

The runway is one of the most important parts of an international airport; and LIA’s runway is properly maintained through regular inspection before and after flights.

So far, three temporary certificates had been issued to Clark, Iloilo and Davao International Airports while the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and Cebu International Airport are already aerodrome-certified.

To date, LIA caters to one international flight, a chartered flight from Guangzhou, China, whichhas a flight every Tuesdays and Saturdays. All other LIA flights are domestic flights.

The Laoag airport has a newly installed baggage conveyors for both international and domestic passengers. The two conveyor baggage carousel at the check-in counters of the airlines and the newly-established international pre-departure area.

The terminal building is also undergoing improvements and is temporarily closed.

Once completed, it will become the pre-departure area for domestic flight passengers. There will also be a designated areas for the Bureau of Customs, Bureau of Immigration and Quarantine inside the airport.

A Gender and Development (GAD) facility room was also recently installed here where children can play while waiting for their flights and a breastfeeding area for nursing mothers. PNA/
