Landslide hits SoCot village: One hurt

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Aug. 7 — A villager was injured after a landslide hit a remote community in Banga town in South Cotabato on Sunday afternoon.

Dionito Otic, head of the Banga Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), said Monday the incident happened *at around 5 p.m. at a portion of Sitio Little Baguio in Barangay El Nonok.

He said two houses owned by the Balolo and Laugan families were totally destroyed as a result of the landslide, which happened following heavy rains in the area.

“Loosened portions of a nearby hill gave way after the rains and struck two nearby houses,” he said in an interview over Brigada News FM in Koronadal City.

A resident, identified as 21 year-old Bernie Balolo, sustained injuries after reportedly being buried in the landslide, he said.

Otic said the victim was immediately rescued by responding family members and neighbors and was rushed to a hospital in the area.

He said their office has provided the affected families with food packs, sleeping mats and other relief items.

A team from the MDRRMO has been dispatched to the area to assess the situation and determine other possible damages caused by the landslide.

Owing to the incident, Otic urged local residents to remain vigilant and prepared as the area’s situation remains volatile due to intermittent heavy rains.

He added that their office has been continuously monitoring several other barangays within the municipality that are considered prone to floods and landslides. PNA-northboundasia.com
