La Union village chief killed, another wounded in gun attacks

CAMP DIEGO SILANG, La Union – A barangay captain in Bacnotan town was gunned down by unidentified suspects Thursday, while another village chair in Barangay Sto. Rosario in San Juan survived an assassination try..

Senior Superintendent Angelito Dumangeng, La Union police director, identified the fatality as Roberto Cariaso, 62, chair of Barangay Sta. Rita, Bacnotan while the wounded official is Arjel Macato, chair of Barangay Sto. Rosario.

Dumangeng said Cariaso had just come from a meeting at the municipal hall at around 11:30 a.m. when he went for a snack at a burger store in the town plaza. While eating, a gunman allegedly went near him and shot him several times.

The gunman escaped on a waiting motorcycle driven by another man.

Cariaso was rushed to the Lorma Medical Center in San Fernando City but did not survive. He died at around 6:00 p.m. due to multiple gunshot wounds.

Police are looking into politics as possible motive of the killing. Recovered from the crime scene were several empty bullet shells of caliber 45.

Macato, is still going under treatment at the same hospital due to gunshot wound on his shoulder. He was shot by an unidentified man at his home at around 5:00 p.m.

Police said the motive might be related to illegal drugs because Macato was identified as one of the drug personalities in the area.

Meanwhile, seven village officials who are allegedly involved in the illegal drug trade voluntarily surrendered to Dumangeng yesterday here.
