La Union Solon escapes bomb blast

AGOO, La Union-Rep. Eufranio “Franny” Eriguel of the 2nd District here, escaped death when a remote controlled bomb placed on a parked motorcycle exploded just as his car passed by from his home to a campaign sortie, Saturday morning.

Eriguel in a phone interview with this reporter said that two of his bodyguards who rode in the back-up car and just behind Eriguel’s car suffered burns all over their bodies and were rushed to a local hospital in San Fernando City, La Union.

“They detonated the bomb but I already got passed the scene in split second,” Eriguel said.

Eriguel is now on his third and final term as congressman as his wife, incumbent Agoo Mayor Sandra, who is also on her final term, is running for congresswoman against retired General Tomas Dumpit, Jr.

“You know them but it’s hard to point to anybody although there was always threats in the past, anyway, our campaign continues,” he added.

Earlier, there was a report that Eriguel was hurt but denied any, saying that his two bodyguards suffered the brunt of the blast.

“I learned that they are now in critical condition,” he said.

The explosion happened along Verceles Street in Agoo, near the Eriguels’ home.

Eriguel’s wife Sandra is running under the ticket of Abono Partylist of Cong. Francisco “Pacoy” Ortega, who is running for governor of La Union.

Supt. Artemio Infante, Public Information Officer, said that the La Union Police Provincial Office is conducting a meeting to probe the incident. William Jun Garcia/
