La Union male teener shot dead along remote village road

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – The body of a 17-year-old male, a robbery suspect and allegedly involved in illegal drugs, was found along an isolated village road at about 7:00 a.m. in Barangay Calabugao last Sunday.

Inspector Edgar Espenueva, city police operations officer, identified the victim as Johnver D. Valdez, a resident of Barangay Sibuan-Otong this city.

Espenueva said that the victim’s body bore gunshot wounds–two in the head and three at the back of the body– and both hands and mouth were wrapped in masking tapes. The victim has been dead for almost four hours, according to Dr. Romulo Monico, who accompanied the responding policemen who retrieved the body.

Personnel of Scene of the Crime Operatives recovered five empty shells of a caliber. 45 pistol in the shooting area, while two large sachets of dried marijuana leaves wrapped in a plasticwere found beside the victim’s body.

It was not explained, but based on the circumstances, it was possible that Valdez’ killers seized him in the night from his home in Sibuan-Otong, gagged and tied him, and dragged him to a vehicle then took him to the barangay, where they gunned him down. Calabugao is one of the remotest rural barangays of the city, sparsely populated, and several kilometers away from the victim’s residence.

The victim was recognized by the city police investigators by a tattoo, “Myra,” marked on his left shoulder.

It was also revealed that Valdez recently escaped from the Department of Social Welfare and Development Regional Rehabilitation Center for Youth in Barangay Urayong, Bauang town. He had been placed in custody at the Center by the City Social Welfare and Development after he was caught robbing a store in Sevilla here.

The body of the victim is now at a funeral home for claimants, while the police are conducting further investigation of the case. Erwin Beleo/
