La Union Lawmakers Nix Impeachment Complaint Vs. President Duterte

SAN FERNANDO CITY – La Union Representatives Pablo Ortega (1st District) and Sandra Y. Eriguel (2nd District) belittled the impeachment complaint filed against President Duterte.
“I’m sure it will be junked in the committee level when Congress resumes session on May 2, ” he said, referring to the impeachment complaint filed last week by Magdalo Party-list Representative Gary Alejano.
“I think the complaint is weak if he (Alejano who is allied to foremost Duterte critic Sen. Antonio Trillianes) based it on recent issues (against the  President) that have been already tackled during the elections and in various Senate hearings,” Ortega said.
He did not say that he read the impeachment complaint in its entirety.
Ortega expressed belief that the majority coalition in the House of Representatives would kill the impeachment complaint because they still have the overwhelming numbers of solons in the Lower Chamber.
“Even some of the opposition lawmakers would not agree in impeaching the President who still enjoys the support of most of the Filipino population,” he said.
Eriguel, for her part, said the impeachment would not prosper considering that Duterte allies, she said, are still in control of the House and Senate.
Ortega and Eriguel are members of the ruling PDP-Laban party and both voted in favor of the death penalty bill including Abono party-list Representative Vini Nola Ortega, wife of Governor Francisco Emmanuel Ortega III.
