La Union declares state of calamity due to Ompong’s wrath

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – After conducting assessment on the damages caused by Typhoon Ompong, the provincial government of La Union declared state of calamity Wednesday.
 
La Union Governor Francisco Emmanuel Ortega III signed the resolution declaring the province under a state of calamity with damages of more than two billion pesos.
 
Based on the resolution, a total of P933. 97 million were destroyed on agricultural crops, P982.9 on infrastructure projects, and more than P1 million on livestocks, with a total 29, 000 families affected.
 
“With the above facts and figures, careful assessment, review and endorsement of Governor Ortega, it is now imperative that the province be declared under a state of calamity,” reads part of the resolution.

The declaration of state of calamity will allow the provincial government to utilize the five percent calamity fund to help those affected.
 
Meanwhile, Vigan City in Ilocos Sur also declared yesterday a state of calamity after conducting evaluation on the damages caused by the Typhoon.
 
Councilor Third Ranches said the city government, aside from the evaluation of damages on crops and infrastructure, was also conducting assessment on destruction of ancestral houses and buildings. Jun Elias/NPN-northboundasia.com
