SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – A senior police officer who was based at the city police station here, and his wife were arrested Friday by his colleagues of the La Union Provincial Intelligence branch of the Philippine National Police and the Central Intelligence and Detection Group, for five counts of estafa.
Police identified the suspects as SPO1 Garry R. Ancheta, 40, and his wife Lanie, 37, both residents of Purok 3, Barangay San Francisco this city.
The Ancheta couple were arrested by virtue of a warrant dated May 9, 2017 issued by San Fernando City Regional Trial Court Branch 66 Judge Victor Conception, with recommended bail bond amounting to P114,000.00 each.
According to at least 20 complainants who did not want to be identified, the couple convinced them to invest in a money scheme that would guarantee them twice the amount of money they invested.
These complainants invested their money in the fund because of the assurance given them by Ancheta, who identified himself as member of the Philippine National Police. It turned out that the scheme was a “ big scam” that defrauded money from investors.
It was learned that Ancheta and his wife collected about a million pesos from the complainants. No date was given when the couple began collecting the money, or when they stopped the activity.
Lanie is confined for a number of illnesses at the Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center here, while SPO1 Ancheta is detained at the police station. It was not known whether she was confined at the hospital after her arrest.
Estafa or swindling money in various ways is a punishable crime– one penalty is prison correccional in its maximum period– under Article 315 of the Revised Penal Code. If convicted and depending upon the penalty imposed by the court, it is understood that the Ancheta couple will suffer imprisonment for each offense they committed. Erwin Beleo/NPN-northboundasia.com
