La Union Congresswoman wants live televised execution of death convicts

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – If she has her way, La Union 2nd district Representative Sandra Young Eriguel wants live televised execution of death convict and open for public viewing to sow fear, she said, among those who intend to commit heinous crimes.

“Any method (of death penalty), as long as it is viewed on national TV because that would give impact or fear,”  Eriguel said.

Eriguel, together with 1st district Rep. Pablo Ortega and Abono Partylist Rep. Vini Nola Ortega, wife of Gov. Francisco Emmanuel Ortega, voted in favor of the death penalty bill.

Eriguel said that the House of Representatives did not tackle the method of death execution but it will surely be discussed in the plenary.

“Maybe firing squad, it has more impact to deter crime when viewed in public. I used to favour lethal injection but on second thought, if firing squad is televised live, maybe those planning to commit heinous crimes will think twice,” she said.

Rep. Pablo Ortega, who favors lethal injection, said that the judiciary, whatever the method of death execution, will play a very important role once the death penalty is restored because they will be the ones deciding heinous crimes cases with death sentences.

“The judiciary plays a vital role in the implementation of the death penalty. Judges should study carefully that those who will be charged with heinous crimes will be investigated properly. They should study well if the accused deserves death,” he said.

Ortega said he is not in favor of the inclusion of plunder in the death penalty because, he said,  it is sometimes being made as reason for political revenge. Jun Elias/Northbound Philippines News
