SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union–An equipment for monitoring ambient air quality known as Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy will be inaugurated on February 11 at the newly-designated Air Quality Monitoring Station at the compound of the Philippine National Police in Region 1 at Camp Florendo in barangay Parian here.

The installation of the DOAS system is part of the Environmental Management Bureau’s (EMB) program in strengthening Ambient Air Quality Monitoring, according to EMB Regional Director Ma. Victoria V. Abrera.

“It will provide the city continuous timely update on air quality for six pollution parameters–Nitrogen Dioxide, Sulfur Dioxide, Ozone , Carbon Monoxide; and Particulate Matters 10 and 2.5– that will support us in programs and measures in the reduction of air pollution,” she said.

The DOAS gathers and analyzes air samples to accurately measure pollutants which will be recorded in the on-site computer then transmitted real-time via the internet to the EMB Central Office in Quezon City as well as the concerned EMB Regional Office for evaluation and quality monitoring.

The inauguration will be led by DENR Assistant Secretary and concurrent EMB Director Atty. Juan Miguel T. Cuna, Governor Manuel C. Ortega, San Fernando City Mayor Pablo C. Ortega, one of the signatories in the Memorandum of Agreement which officially designates the Camp Florendo compound as Air Quality Monitoring Station in the city; PNP Regional Director Ericson T. Velasquez, DENR-I Regional Director Paquito T. Moreno, Jr. including former City Mayor Mary Jane C. Ortega and media practitioners.

The first DOAS system in Region I was installed in 2014 at Brgy. Anonas, Urdaneta City, Pangasinan. In the same year, another automatic real-time Particulate Matter Station was put up at the Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, Batac City, Ilocos Norte.

The installation of real-time air monitoring station in the province is expected to further boost EMB’s collaborative anti-air pollution campaign in Northern Luzon and the rest of the country. Maynard Sydney Cara, EMB R1/
