La Salle finishes off Ateneo, claims UAAP women’s volleyball title

MANILA — The De La Salle University Lady Spikers claimed their 9th title at the expense of archrival Ateneo University Lady Eagles at the Game three Finals showdown of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 78 Women’s Volleyball on Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Lady Spikers bagged a four set win against the Lady Eagles: 19-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-16.

Kim Dy was named finals Most Valuable Player after finishing with 17 points, including the lethal spike that sealed the championship for the Lady Spikers.

Three-time MVP Alyssa Valdez spearheaded the Lady Eagles’ hot start in the first set as they launched back-breaking hits the Lady Spikers couldn’t handle. They eventually took the first set, 25-19.

La Salle’s armada of hard hitters showed up in the second set as Ara Galang and Cyd Demecillo paced the Taft-based squad with laser-like spikes en route to a 25-21 set triumph.

La Salle took an early lead in the third set but Alyssa Valdez and Amy Amohiro retaliated with fierce attacks that narrowed the gap to five, 14-9. Mika Reyes led La Salle’s retaliation with huge blocks and scorching spikes. In the end, Kim Dy and Kim Fajardo’s back-to-back hits enabled La Salle to clinch the third set.

The women from Taft showcased their utmost dominance in the fourth set as they immediately buried Ateneo by ten, 15-5 but Alyssa Valdez did everything she can to trim La Salle’s huge margin, but the Lady Spikers countered it with a combination of wall-like defense and blistering offense to secure the championship.
