SAN MATEO, Isabela — The local government unit of this town is bracing itself against the possible effect of El Nino to the agriculture sector here.
Emiliano Camba, municipal agriculturist, said that even with the presence of Magat dam, Asia’s biggest, servicing the town, it is necessary to prepare for El Nino effect.
Camba said San Mateo is primarily engaged in agriculture where majority of residents are rice, corn and munggo farmers.
“El Nino effect can be prevented if there are mitigating measures already in place”, Camba said.
He said some of his office’s recommendation to mitigate the impact of El Nino included the purchase of additional water pumps and construction of deep wells and water impounding projects in partnership with the Department of Agriculture (DA).
The agriculture official said scarcity of water in farming would lead to agricultural losses.
He said El Nino effect could be prevented when there were already mitigating measures in place and as early the LGU – San Maeo already started. PNA/ www.northboundasia.com
