SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – The Department of Public Works and Highways regional office here has directed all district engineers in Region 1 to create teams to help the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the removal and tearing down of all election propaganda and campaign materials found in areas prohibited by law for posting and display.
Regional Director Mariano Briosos said that the DPWH team will coordinate will coordinate and consult with the local field offices or task forces of the Comelec regarding their duties and responsibilities and provide the facilities and equipment needed for taking down the illegal campaign paraphernalia.
The directive was in line with the memorandum of agreement between the Comelec and DPWH central offices for the implementation of such activity during the election period.
“The DPWH Team, by authority of the Comelec may immediately remove, confiscate and or destroy any election propaganda found in prohibited areas,” Briosos said.
He said that before the removal down of any election propaganda, photographs would be taken with captions stating the violation
committed pursuant to the Implementing Rules and Regulations of the Fair Election Act for 2016 National Election.
Political parties and party list groups are authorized to erect a common poster areas for their candidates in not more than 10 public places wherein candidates can post, display or exhibit election propaganda, according to the election law..
Confiscated campaign materials will be delivered to the concerned Comelec office for safekeeping and or proper disposal.
The DPWH has ten district engineering offices located in the cities and provinces of La Union, Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan and Ilocos Norte. JUN ELIAS/northboundasia.com
