Health chief assures readiness of hospitals for New Year celebration

MANILA — Health Secretary Dr. Paulyn Rosell-Ubial on Tuesday assured the readiness of health facilities to respond to any health emergency during the upcoming New Year revelry.

Ubial gave the assurance as she made the rounds of hospitals, starting with the Las Piñas General Hospital and Satellite Trauma Center, to inspect their readiness to respond to any eventuality during the holiday celebrations. She said health department-retained hospitals in the provinces will also be inspected.

Meanwhile, she again called on the public to have a safe celebration this Christmas season by opting to make noises instead of lighting firecrackers — or leave the firecrackers to those who have the skills to light them.

She noted that based on health department records, 40 percent of injuries among children during the holidays are due to firecrackers; and 30 percent of adults are under the influence of alcohol when they welcome the New Year.
