GSIS calls for scholarship applications

MANILA, Philippines — The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) is now accepting applications for their enhanced college scholarship program covering academic year 2016-2017.

For this year, the GSIS Scholarship Program (GSP) adopted various innovations to gain a wider reach.

The enhanced GSP is no longer limited to incoming college freshmen students but to all college year levels taking up any four or five year course.This is in response to ongoing transition period brought about by the K-12 program.

Furthermore, there is an increase in the number of scholarship slots from 200 to 400, with another 40 slots allocated to qualified dependents of persons with disabilities (PWD), indigenous peoples, and solo parents.

Aside from increased slots, the scholars will receive an increased monthly stipend from Php2,000 to Php3,000. Plus, there is a monetary incentive to those who will graduate with latin honors: Php 20,000 for cum laude;Php 30,000 for magna cum laude; and Php 50,000 for summa cum laude.

Active and regular GSIS members who have qualified children or dependents may apply for GSP if they are permanent in status in the government for at least three years, have a salary grade of 24 or below (or its equivalent job level), and have paid premium contributions for the last six months.

The GSP scholars will be entitled to the actual cost of tuition and miscellaneous fees not exceeding Php 40,000 per academic year.

In addition, childless married members, single members, and permanent total disability (PTD) pensioners below 60 years old, are eligible.

For PTD pensioners, entitlement shall be determined based on their last compensation prior to retirement.
