Gatchalian urges stringent probe over concert deaths’ reported link to drug overdose

MANILA — Senator-elect Win Gatchalian urged investigating authorities on Tuesday to confirm reports indicating that illegal drugs are to blame for the deaths of five individuals who attended the recent Closeup Forever Summer Concert in Pasay City.

“The police need to investigate the drug angle very carefully. We need to know exactly what happened so that we can prevent senseless deaths like this from happening again,” said Gatchalian, the incumbent congressman of Valenzuela City’s first district.

After the National Capital Region Police Office confirmed the deaths on Sunday, some concert attendees took to social media to blame the deaths on Green Amore — a green capsule containing a mix of ecstasy and shabu — which was supposedly taken by the victims at the concert.

“We need to get to the bottom of what really happened at Forever Summer Concert. If drugs caused this tragedy, then we need to find who gave these kids the drugs and punish them to the fullest extent of the law,” said Gatchalian.

The veteran lawmaker also reiterated his support for incoming President Rodrigo Duterte’s crusade against drugs, promising to work with his administration and to pass laws which will enhance the government’s capacity to run effective operations against drug syndicates.

“The fight against drugs is a fight to protect the future of our children. It is a fight we cannot afford to lose. We must strike hard and fast to bring these drug lords to their knees, once and for all,” he said. Sammy Martin/PNA/
