MANILA — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has said that the proposed law postponing the Oct. 31 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections is currently awaiting the signature of President Rodrigo R. Duterte.
Comelec Chairman Juan Andres Bautista disclosed that the enrolled bill on the deferment of the village and youth polls is now with the Office of the President.
With this, he is hoping that the Chief Executive will sign the bill within the month.
“That depends on the President (on when it will be signed into law). But we are very much hopeful that it will be signed before October 31,” Bautista added.
Earlier, the Senate and the House of Representatives passed separate bills on the postponement of the said polls from Oct. 31, 2016 to Oct. 23, 2017.
President Duterte has expressed support on the postponement of the October 2016 polls.
Relying on the impending deferment of the Barangay and SK polls, the poll body, through Comelec Resolution No. 10164, has ordered the suspension of all activities in connection with the preparations for the scheduled polls.
These include the printing of the official ballots, acquisition of election paraphernalia and other election-related proceedings. PNA-northboundasia.com
