Deadline for Urban Gardening Competition set

BAGUIO CITY – Baguio City Councilor Leandro Yangot Jr. on Saturday said urban gardeners have up to April 2017 to prepare for a city-wide home garden or backyard gardening competition and showcase.

The contest aims to encourage edible urban gardening, with residents showing off their gardens to registered members of the public for a day tour.

Participating gardeners may choose to open their gardens all day or only for a certain time during the day for tours.

Registration may be done by e-mail – or – providing the first and last name, home address, phone number and a 100-word description of the garden and four photos of the edible garden.

Submission of entries is open until Feb. 25 while showcase guest registration ends on March 25.

Judging begins on April 2 through 24, and awarding of winners will be on April 25.

Entries will be judged based on the visual appeal and impact, with complementary colors of the plants and non-plant materials, texture of plants, landscape materials, light and shade due to arrangement, with decorative materials, pieces of art, water fountains, architectural features for overall effect of the garden are considered for judging.

The board of judges will include Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan, Yangot and representatives from the Department of Agriculture – Cordillera Regional Office (DA-CAR), Department of Trade and Industry – Cordillera Regional Office (DTI-CAR) and the private sector.

The judges may consider the design, balance, composition, creativity, plant variety, evidence of maintenance and use of recyclable materials.
