BAGUIO CITY -– City General Services Officer (GSO) Romeo D. Concio on Monday confirmed that with the city government’s unrelenting and uncompromising efforts to come up with sustainable solutions to the garbage disposal problem, resulted in the continuous reduction of the hauling cost of the residual waste outside the city over the past several years.
Concio said the city government was spending PHP3,400 per ton of garbage being hauled to Capas, Tarlac even before 2010.
The cost was significantly reduced to PHP1,432.
Concio said the prevailing hauling cost to the Metro Clark Engineered Sanitary Landfill (MCESL) in Capas, Tarlac is PHP932 per ton plus PHP500 per ton as tipping fee paid to the landfill operator.
The city produces about 160 tons of garbage being hauled to the MCESL which eventually reduced to 155 tons daily in 2014 and further reduced to 135 tons in 2015 which is the average tonnage in 2016.
Concio attributes the significant reduction to the increasing compliance of residents on the waste segregation scheme.
The annual hauling expense of PHP150 million between 2009 and 2010 was reduced to just a little more than PHP72 million in 2015, Concio said.
Concio added that the city government will continue to pursue the strict implementation of segregation of waste at source with the cooperation of the barangays and residents.
The city government will also pursue its plan to develop an Integrated Solid Waste Disposal facility, identified as the long-term solution to the city’s garbage problem, Concio said. PNA/northboundasia.com
