Construction worker dies as drainage canal walls collapse

MAPANDAN, Pangasinan — A 45-year-old construction worker died after he was trapped in a drainage canal when its walls collapsed in Barangay Nilombot here on Tuesday.

Senior Inspector Bernard Antolin, in an interview on Wednesday, identified the victim as Roberto Peralta, resident of Barangay Matic-Matic, Sta. Barbara town.

Antolin said based on their investigation, Peralta was working on the almost five-foot deep drainage canal when its walls collapsed.

“The drainage being constructed is very near a creek, and the victim was shoveling the land drainage canal’s flooring to flatten it because it was uneven, so that the water would flow, but due to non-stop rains in the past weeks, the drainage canal’s walls, still of soil since it is still being constructed, collapsed,” he said.

Antolin said it took an hour before Peralta was recovered from the pit by his co-workers.

He added that the victim was brought to a nearby hospital but he eventually died due to blunt force trauma, according to the attending physician.

“We heard from the family of the victim that the company, which Peralta works for, will shoulder the cost of the victim’s funeral,” Antolin said. Hilda Austria/PNA video courtesy of Ronald Amansec
