Comelec probes fake birth records used in Samar voters’ registration

STA. MARGARITA, Samar — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) office here will look into the use of falsified baptismal certificates by several individuals.

Last week, five registrants in this town were alleged to have presented bogus certificates of live birth, which is a prerequisite for voter’s registration.

Town elections officer Senona C. Calagos recalled that during her interview with Bisaya-speaking registrants, they claimed that they are from the town of Masbate. However, their birth records show that they are natives of Sta. Margarita town.

“It’s obvious because a lot of times, an individual would not say anything. Sometimes they would give reasons why they have fake records but regardless of the reason, it’s a crime,” she explained.

The town’s parish priest, Father Renato Piczon, reported that his signature was also forged. The documents had fake stamps embossed with a church seal.

This same modus operandi was also discovered in Pagsanghan, Samar, thus, the Comelec and the parish priest are bent on investigating the fraud. PNA
