Comelec creates subcommittee to verify accuracy of votes for senators, partylists

MANILA — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has created a subcommittee that would verify the veracity of the votes for the senatorial and partylist posts in the just concluded May 9 polls.

According to Comelec Chairman Juan Andres Bautista the subcommittee to be headed by Atty. Consuelo Diola of the Office of the Secretary of Commission, will make sure that the votes are accurate.

“What we are trying to do here is to double check to ensure the accuracy of the votes that have been received by each of the senatorial candidates and by the partylist groups,” he said during the canvassing of votes for senators and partylist representatives of the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC) at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.

On the other hand, Comelec Commissioner Christian Robert Lim noted that it will also allow parties to scrutinize the printed Certificates of Canvass (COC) with the hard copies of the COCs, and the statement of votes per municipality.

But, he clarified that the COCs that will be subject to the subcommittee are only those that have been criticized.

“The NBOC has resolved that the COCs that will be the subject of the subcommittee will be the COCs that were properly objected to… and subject of a written motion,” the poll body official added.

The subcommittee, which will start at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2016.

With this, Bautista said the NBOC will resume the canvassing on Monday.

“We are looking to resume the canvassing on Monday…the faster that we finish the subcommittee work the better it will be for everyone,” he added. Ferdinand Patinio/PNA/northboundasia.com
