CITY MAYOR HOLDS BIKE FEST TO PROMOTE HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, La Union – More than 300 biker-enthusiasts participated in the 4-legged Pablo C. Ortega Bike- Fest, a bike tour around the towns in the first district of La Union, which ended Sunday here.
The activity, the first of it kind, was aimed to promote healthy lifestyle among bicycle riders.
City Mayor Pablo C. Ortega, founder of the Fun Cycling Club of La Union, said that the event is expected to encourage more individuals to join the club. This is because, he said, biking as an aerobic exercise like walking or jogging helps a person get the same cardiovascular benefits from these activities.
“Biking can help fight incremental weight gain. As the cheapest and healthiest mode of transportation, it helps in making us physically fit and active as we age,” he stressed.
Ortega disclosed that without his passion for biking, he would not have reached his present age and the exercise helped him before he underwent a heart surgery in the past.
The first leg of the competition started on Oct. 25, from San Fernando City to San Gabriel town, followed by the San Fernando City- Luna on Nov 15. The third phase, the Luna- Sudipen route on Nov. 22, while the final leg was the 52-kilometer Sudipen- San Fernando City punishing race.
Awarding ceremonies were made after the final leg, in front of the city hall.
The over-all champion in the individual category was Carlos Gazmin, 25, of Narvacan, Ilocos Sur. Gazmin also joined “Ronda Pilipinas,” the national cycling competition.
The RED Team consisting of 23 cyclists was declared as the over-all champion in the group category.
Mayor Ortega assured participants that the bike- fest would be an annual event in the coming years. ERWIN G. BELEO/NorthboundPH
